Raising industry standards

In July 2018 APAN launched their CPD program to encourage Continuing Professional Development. This initiative allows professionals to gain recognition in being qualified to perform their professional responsibilities. What other options could be considered to raise standards in a professional environment that remains unregulated?

This was the sixth and final question discussed in detail at a recent Professional Beauty Industry Roundtable focused on advancing education.

Each of our suppliers and salon owners spoke agreed client safety was paramount and regulations needed to be standardised to ensure this.

Our panel of eight guests ‒ Bianca Polinelli from Just Lashes, Otto Mitter from Ex-Import Niche Products, Emma Hobson from Dermalogica, Pene Timberlake from Candela Medical, Karla McDiarmid from Macquarie Medi Spa, Anh Hoang from Le Beauty, Jess Goldenberg from The Therapist Co and Kylie Scarfe from Vamp Cosmetic Clinic ‒ stressed the importance of national standards to increase patient safety.

Jess Goldenberg from The Therapist Co said the industry needed some drastic regulations introduced into what was a somewhat unregulated industry.

Otto Mitter from Ex-Import Niche Products said it was important as a business owner to do your own internal auditing processes to ensure that you were maintaining a good professional standard.

Kylie Scarfe from Vamp Cosmetic Clinic said there needed to be regulations, particularly with device-based treatments.

Pene Timberlake from Candela Medical said the whole industry from the ground up should be looked at from a regulation perspective, really thoroughly and seriously.
