5 Beauty Salon Products We Tried and Loved

PB Beauty Editor Hannah Gay opens her beauty cabinet and shares five tried-and-tested products she’s emptied of late.

Ardell Naked Lashes

Ardell Naked Lashes in #424

False lashes are a tricky business IMO. As much as I’ve always admired the look, it’s the application process and discomfort that have led me astray. So you can imagine how floored I was when I came across Ardell’s Naked Lashes and finally understood what falsies should feel like – weightless. Throughout my day of wear, they became surprisingly less noticeable and so I was resistant to remove them come sleep, unlike the more obstructing styles I’ve tried previously. These have since become a makeup kit staple!

Phasilab Instant Demake HA

Phasilab Instant Demake HA Make Up Remover Face & Eyes

I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve tried EVERY micellar out there. And to my dismay, only a handful of those are worth a mention. One of which is this one by Phasilab. My favourite thing about this formula is that it glides over the skin without jerking in the way alcohol-rich formulas can do. Because it contains hydrating hyaluronic acid and soothing camomile, I was comfortable using it to wipe away the day, leaving my skin to breathe over dinner before conducting a deep secondary cleanse before bed. It’s fragrance-free, plus a little goes a long way – a strong investment.

Vela Days Lipid Complex

Vela Days Lipid Complex CannaComplex Cleansing Balm

On first using this cleanser, I was instantly impressed. The hook? Its consistency. The cleanser is a gel-to-milk formula dispensable via a stylishly designed, user-friendly pump. Expelled as a pretty, aquamarine gel, I was surprised at how gentle yet thorough the formula was at removing my makeup (I’ve found other gel-to-milk cleansers to be too weak). The product has integrated seamlessly into my routine, regardless of how my skin is behaving from one day to the next. Vela Days is also big on sustainability, offering refillable packaging across its skincare line – tick and tick!

By The Be. Hand + Cuticle Oil

By The Be. Hand + Cuticle Oil in Sombre

I’ve spoken about this product before and I’ll do it again here because frankly, it’s darn good. A long-time ritual of mine is to apply a rich hand cream before sleep, particularly once the cooler months kick off and the skin becomes rough to the touch. This oil from By The Be. is a dream to use, as it soaks in well without the impractical residue commonly left with oil use. The best bit about it is the gentle scent of lavender it omits – a source of calm as the day draws to a close. I was so impressed with this product, I’ll be looking to try the brand’s other blends, too.

Ultra Violette Queen Screen

Ultra Violette Queen Screen SPF 50+ Luminising Serum SKINscreen

We all know how essential daily sunscreen wear is, but we’d be lying if we said it was our favourite step in our AM skincare routines. I know it certainly wasn’t for me, until the sway of the Ultra Violette movement finally caught up. I’ve been using the brand’s Queen Screen for the last few weeks and can, without hesitation, say it’s the best SPF I’ve tried. Initially intrigued by the brand’s Instagram allure and hundreds of 5-star reviews, I held high expectations for the product. Its liquid is breathable on wear and thin enough to disperse via a hygienic dropper without clogging. It leaves a non-intrusive scent and non-greasy feel, sans white cast. In short, it ticks all the boxes of a daily face sunscreen other brands promise but don’t deliver on. Safe to say, it didn’t disappoint.
