The previously imposed restrictions in Greater Sydney have, in part, been extended through 12:01am on Monday, 17 May. The latest restrictions require all staff in the following beauty businesses to wear masks if working with members of the public (back-of-house staff are not required to wear them):
- hairdressing salons
- nail salons
- beauty salons
- tanning salons
- waxing salons
- spas
- tattoo parlours
- massage parlours
Clients and customers are still required to check in using the NSW Services Covid Safe App and businesses are still required to follow the pertinent square-metre rule. More information can be found at the NSW Government page for Covid rules and restrictions.

Thursday, 7 May 2021] Friday Following on from the recently discovered cases of locally acquired Covid in Sydney’s inner suburbs, snap restrictions will be in place for Great Sydney, including the Central Coast and Illawarra, from 5pm today (Thursday, 6 May 2021) until 12am on Monday. They will have an effect on beauty businesses, although you will not be required to close. According to the ABC, “Lab results have shown the sequence from the new case matched with an overseas case, who had travelled from the US and went to the Park Royal at Darling Harbour. The person was tested on day one of quarantine. They tested positive and was moved to the Sydney Health Accommodation, on 28 April. Dr. Chant said they were reviewing CCTV footage to look into how transmission occurred from the traveller.”
Masks are compulsory to wear in all indoor venues, including on public transit, at the supermarket and any other indoor event. Hair salons, spas, nail salons and any other beauty-related venue that receives clients indoors should assume this applies to them and should wear a mask while doing business and require customers to also wear masks.
Restrictions to be enforced from 5pm tonight
- No more than 20 guests (including children) to gather in a household
- Masks compulsory on public transport and in public indoor venues including retail, theatres, hospitals and aged care facilities
- Front of house hospitality staff must wear face masks
- Drinking while standing in indoor venue is not allowed
- Singing by audiences at indoor shows or at indoor worship is not allowed
- Dancing is not allowed in indoor hospitality venues or clubs, except for at weddings where it’s recommended no more than 20 people are on a dancefloor at one time
- Visitors to aged care facilities must be limited to two people
