The nails your customers will want next

We’re seen a lot of weird nail trends over the years. Pom pom nails, a werewolf-inspired top coat, talon-esque tips and scorpion manicures (don’t ask), but this one is setting a new bench mark.

Nail piercing is making a return, with the ‘90s trend gracing the fingers of some of the world’s most followed influencers. Kim Kardashian showcased a set of double-pierced nails just last week, while Katy Perry, Vanessa Hudgens and Bella Thorne have also been adorning their digits with a set of rings.

Anything from a simple stud to key chains complete with the initials of the owner are on offer, however, as you may have figured, the trend isn’t exactly practical.

“I would avoid your thumb of index fingers as those are most likely to snag while you are tying,” Liliana Pennington, brand educator for Londontown told marie claire. Pennington suggests making the look more wearable by clients limiting piercings to just one finger or hand. You’ve been warned, beauties.

It’s also important to note that this look only works with acrylics rather than the natural nail, however, wire art, another burgeoning trend, can be worn bare-nailed.
Hailing from South Korea, founder Eun Kyung Park shapes fine wire into miniscule designs that accentuate the nail.

Park told marie claire that the new technique was inspired by neon signs. “When you make neon signs, you have to bend the wires to make certain lettering,” she told the magazine. “It’s one long wire that’s bent to create and connect the letters. I thought this was really cool and since nails are an accessory, I wanted it to be used for expression. Like rings.”

While the design is just as beautiful, if not more so, than nail piercing, it too suffers from impracticality. “Since it’s a wire, you have to make sure the sharp end has a nice finish so it doesn’t get caught in clothes,” says Park.

Anything for beauty, no?
