Australian journalist launches beauty oil range

In the summer of 2015, Australian Jasmine Garnsworthy made a living complaining about the condition of her skin. As a freelance beauty journalist, Garnsworthy was suffering from a classic case of irony – and an extreme cystic acne breakout. She spent hours scouring the internet for the miracle cure – prodigy elixirs, harsh prescription creams, antibiotic dosages, and multiple (expensive) visits to the dermatologist didn’t deliver the cure either.

The extensive research did yield one bonus, however. Garnsworthy learned about the ‘nasties’ found in multiple products of renowned skincare and makeup companies. The revelation saw her purge her vanity and reworking her beauty routine to include only clean products.

She learned that jojoba oil was a natural anti-bacterial and hydrator, not to mention had the ability to mimic the skin’s sebum and didn’t block pores. She also discovered that tamanu oil had been used for generations by Polynesian women to treat acne and reduce scarring. Two months later and Garnsworthy’s skin was glowing.

A year later and she’s just about to release her own range of facial and body oils called The Buff. “After several weeks of my all-natural new routine—including oiling every day—the acne and residual scarring cleared up and I finally got seemingly lit-within skin that glowed with health,” Garnsworthy told Professional Beauty. “I was hooked, and soon after created my own hydrating oil for acne-prone skin.”

“We’ve since expanded into body oils and personalized face oils targeted to your individual skin needs, whether it’s acne, dryness, redness, or fine lines,” Garnsworthy told Professional Beauty.

So far the range consists of three products – Jojoba face oil, customised body oil and a personalised face oil. Each jar is branded with your initials, while the tailor-made products are crafted specially for your skin type. Garnsworthy draws on a library of organic oils – rosehip, argan, raspberry seed and maracuja just to name a few – to create a serum that’s specific to your needs.

“We use oils such as jojoba, tamanu, rosehip, argan, raspberry seed, and maracuja (derived from passionfruit), handpicking the most relevant to our clients’ needs in order to blend a serum that’s both beautiful and personal,” Garnsworthy tells us.

“There’s a misconception that facial oils can cause acne, whereas in reality, my experience truly showed the opposite, which is why our Hydrating Facial Oil for Acne-Prone Skin has been so popular.”

Even though it’s still early days, this New York-based beauty is already planning worldwide expansion. The collection is only available online at the moment, however Garnsworthy plans to expand into the retail and professional salon market soon.“Right now we’re gearing up to scale—making sure all the infrastructure is in place so that we can fulfill personalized orders quickly,” says Garnsworthy. “We’re also starting to chat with stockists to expand out of the direct-to-consumer model, which is a learning curve in itself.”
