Katrina Brown, spray tanning specialist and founder of The Bronzing Boutique, frequently flies to Los Angeles to bronze the likes of Janice Dickinson and Lindsay Lohan. Her Australian following includes former host of Australia's Next Top Model Charlotte Dawson, Joh Bailey, Terry Biviano, Sophie Monk, Napoleon Perdis, Erika Heynatz and Kerri-Anne Kennelly.
The Bronzing Boutique is housed in the chic and affluent Sydney suburb of Double Bay. The salon atmosphere is one of luxury and opulence, with French Egyptian cotton towels, piped music, and candles create a beautiful ambience while Katrina’s clients wait for their freshly bronzed bodies to dry.
Katrina took five minutes out of her hectic schedule to speak with Professional Beauty about her career as a celebrity spray tanner and how she discovered and harnessed her niche within the increasingly competitive beauty industry.
Please outline your career history.
After school I initially studied advertising and the entered the workforce while completing an arts degree at university. I then worked in the financial services industry for five years which included a secondment in New York.
I have always been obsessed with tanning, and I discovered a significant gap in the market for a natural and organic tanning solution and the perfect tanning salon. I always wanted to start my own business, and so I chose to leave the financial services industry and opened The Bronzing Boutique in Double Bay, Sydney. I also operate a highly popular mobile tanning service.
Why did you decide to establish a salon dedicated to tanning?
In Los Angeles and the United States there are fabulous tanning salons which specialise in bronzing only. Australia didn’t really offer this. My idea was to have a tanning salon with tanning specialists only so they can do the best job possible, rather than just another beauty salon where beauticians who do a bit of everything are not properly trained in tanning products and techniques. Seeing a tanning specialist guarantees a perfect tan every time.
What’s the highlight of your career to date?
It’s great to look at my business and see how far it has come since first established. I started this all on my own from nothing and have worked very hard to build it into a strong brand, and I’m looking forward to expanding the business in the next few years.
