Collagen Induction Therapy & Skincare Formulations

After considering the certifications of your collagen induction therapy device, the products you use in conjunction with your collagen induction therapy treatments for pre and post-care are of utmost importance.

The skin is a highly immune-sensitive organ and the long-term consequences of repeatedly testing the body’s immune system with “injected” ingredients are unknown. Collagen induction therapy increases the absorbed dose, so it is not surprising that side effects are magnified; what may be safe for one person may not be for the next. It is impossible to formulate a product that does not have the potential to trigger an immune response or effect cells physiology adversely as every individual is exactly that: unique. There is a lack of regulatory control relating to infusion of products during and post collagen induction therapy. There is an onus on us as skin professionals to do the best by our clients and their skin health, therefore ‘infusing’ active ingredients into the skin during and directly after CIT treatments should be avoided, after all, we can’t be guaranteed what the long-term outcome will be.

When preparing the skin for microneedling and treating the skin after, the skincare formulation used should be free from:

  • Preservatives and parabens – these may not be tolerated and can cause irritations.
  • Perfumes – these should be restricted to the skin’s surface only and avoided in creams, which penetrate into the skin. They are the number one cause of irritation of the skin.
  • Mineral oils – these may have occlusive effects and therefore affect the natural activity of the skin to produce its own protective substances.
  • Emulsifiers – these may influence the integrity of the skin barrier and cause the loss of natural protective factors when cleansing the skin.
  • Amines – these are frequently accompanying substances of so-called anionic emulsifiers and stress the skin especially if they belong to the group of alkanolamines.
  • Silicones – frequently accompany substances of products containing emulsifiers and create a superficial smooth feeling on the skin.

Being free of these ingredients allows the products to have a proactive and positive effect on the protection of the acid mantle (the surface or protective layer of your skin), regeneration of the skin and increasing your natural hydration, so as not to cause a breakdown with the skin’s natural defence system and maintaining the homeostasis of the skin. Remember, not every product is created with collagen induction therapy in mind!
