Where did you learn makeup artistry?
I did my first course in 1997 at Helene Abicair –a lifetime ago! The course enabled me to establish my foundation and reinforce my love for the industry. Many years later I moved to London where I was fortunate enough to be accepted into an incredible academy. We had some of the most inspiring and amazing teachers who I then later was privileged to assist. You never stop learning and often it’s good to forget the rules and just explore.

Outline your career-to-date
Growing up I was always interested in makeup which became more evident after my first course. Despite my love for it, I am a realist and new it would take a while to establish myself. I completed a Bachelor of Business with a major in Marketing & Management and I’m glad I did. It gave me the knowledge and discipline required to further succeed. Following this, not only have I created a strong demand amongst the bridal industry, I have also worked on shows during London Fashion Week, The Royal Chelsea Event (London), The London Peace Concert, Melbourne Fashion Week, numerous editorials, including international publications such as IKI Magazine, Ellements Magazinze, Vogue Italia’s -Photovogue.com and, of course, the Logies.

What type of makeup artistry do you do?
I do everything from editorial and fashion, to bridal, special occasion and advertising. Weddings are predominantly weekend based and I can do up to 4-5 weddings a weekend during peak season. I tend to focus on Commercial, Fashion and TV work during the week. I enjoy the variety and it satisfies my creative hunger.

How did the Salon Melbourne opportunity arise?
I was recommended to the hairstylist Wade Blackford for the project. I previously saw some of his work and had no hesitation in collaborating. With any sort of collaboration it is important to ensure you both share the same vision and achieve the desired image. Wade is amazing at what he does and appreciates the importance of makeup and how it can finalise a look.

How did you decide on the makeup look and how would you describe it?
Wade created a mood board that demonstrated the hair and makeup look he wished to achieve. He was very open to suggestions so we worked together to achieve the final looks. The skin was kept quite fresh, but contoured, and the brows were coloured and defined. My favourite part was creating the models lashes. I made her natural lashes white and frosty which was an ideal way to finish off the look.

What inspired you?
The hairstyles Wade created lent themselves to the final makeup look, which was modern, soft and wispy. The softness yet structured look required a makeup that wouldn’t distract as such, but compliment each style.

Why do you think the look is a good representation for Salon Melbourne?
The look not only is creative, it’s visually appealing and inspiring. Aesthetically people need it to be both things, which is why I think this look is a great representation for Salon Melbourne.

What makeup trends are you currently loving?
My absolute favourite current trend is the bold red lip! Although different tones, Prada, Burberry, Missoni and Oscar De La Renta all featured this lip during Fashion Week. Paired with a bare, natural eye you can go from work to glam in a flash and look effortlessly chic.

Which three products are always in your kit?
This is the hardest question ever! I’ll have to say Kevyn Aucoin Volume Mascara, as it does not smudge, flake or budge and you only need warm water to remove it. Bioderma Crealine H20 – this magical water will remove every trace of makeup without irritating your skin and is ideal for backstage; and, finally, my compact Glamcor lights, which I take everywhere with me. I can have the best products in the world but if my lighting is bad (and lets face it, us makeup artists are often shoved in a dim corner!) no makeup will look good. These lights are incredible!

Which are your favourite makeup brands?
Again, this is like being asked who is your favourite child! Different brands are incredible at different products. But if I had to choose I would say Chanel, By Terry and NARS. All innovative and quality products.

What’s next for you?
I’m currently experiencing a growing following on my Youtube Channel – Zoe Karlis and blog ME, MY LIPS & EYE. This outlet enables me to educate people on various products and demonstrate the different applications. People are interested in this. We often dismiss how intimidating it can be shopping for different products and asking the right questions. This way consumers are introduced to different brands that they often would not have tried and can learn from a professional right in the comfort of their home.

What would be your top advice for other aspiring makeup artists?
Work hard. It’s not luck, its hard work that will get you where you want to be. Unfortunately there are many students who think they’ll go from school to working on a magazine cover. This is not the case and they are the students who often give up the easiest. Be prepared to assist…forever! I still do, and this is how you learn incredible techniques from industry leaders. Even if you have to clean brushes, paint nails, pass products I promise you this will be the most valuable learning experience.
