Broadway college founder scoops Telstra Business Woman of the Year award for NSW

Sydney-based training organisation, MHM Australasia operating as The Australasian College Broadway, is proud to announce that its Founder and Chairman Maureen Houssein-Mustafa OAM, won the 2011 New South Wales Telstra Business Woman of the Year Commonwealth Bank Business Owner Category Award, last Friday, September 30th. Maureen will now go on to compete for the national title in this category, which will be announced in Melbourne on November 18th.

Ms. Maureen Houssein-Mustafa, who was awarded an OAM earlier this year for her work in vocational education and the community, was honoured by the announcement. Her career in education, which has spanned over 17 years, saw her recognise a gap in the Australian market for quality vocational education.

This inspired her to commence the Australasian College Broadway with an initial investment of $1,600 in 1994. Phenomenal growth since that time has seen the organisation become an internationally renowned organisation valued at $35 million.

The College, which has seen over 300,000 students graduate since its commencement, is Australia’s benchmark Registered Training Organisation delivering 29 nationally-recognised world-class courses that articulate to University qualifications in hair, beauty, nails, make-up, hospitality, aged-care, language, business management and teacher training to domestic and international students.

Accepting the Award Ms. Houssein-Mustafa said, “I was delighted to win the Commonwealth Bank Business Owner Category Award, as the other two finalists are so inspirational and are truly in a class of their own. This Award has motivated me further to launch the MHM Foundation which will see business owners at the start of their career being mentored by experienced and successful business men and women with well established track records. I believe this will provide them with the platform to take their dreams and aspirations to the highest level. Watch this space.”

Maureen, her staff and students are extremely committed to their corporate social responsibility statement and overall industry involvement. Ms. Houssein-Mustafa has personally raised over $60,000 for students to compete in international beauty and hairdressing competitions. Her team often provides pro-bono services to organizations such as Life Changing Experiences Foundation that mentors ‘at risk’ teens, and CANTEEN. And there is ongoing commitment to developing indigenous youth through various College funded programs.

Believing that they have a responsibility as both Australians and education leaders, Ms. Houssein-Mustafa and her team have also been working very hard with industry bodies to rebuild the brand ‘Study in Australia’ internationally, following major Government changes in that area. As such, the College will soon have sites established in China, India and Malaysia.
