It was a momentous occasion not just for the skincare giant, but also for career driven women everywhere, when Dermalogica founder Jane Wurwand stepped on the stage at the Waldorf Astoria in New York last week to accept her award as one of the year’s Cosmetic Executive for Women (CEW) winners.

Recognised for her trailblazing entrepreneurship, Wurwand’s achievements in her time with the brand were described as nothing short of exceptional.

A co-owner and chief visionary behind the skincare brand and The International Dermal Institute (IDI), as well as founder of Dermalogica’s social impact initiative, FITE, Wurwand was delighted to be recognised for her success with the brand.

“We’re excited to have Dermalogica recognized by CEW in this first-time ever entrepreneurial category. The cosmetic industry has given birth to incredible entrepreneurial brands, many founded by women with a singular passion and vision.”

Aimed at recognising and empowering women leading the way in the cosmetic industry, the awards serve as an inspiration to future leaders and reinforce the need for companies to support executive women’s advancement.

In years past, CEW recognised top level executives of major cosmetic corporations, but in the spirit of its 60th anniversary, the organisation recognised women within a new awards category, trailblazing entrepreneurs who have changed an industry.

And Wurwand has certainly had a hand in that.

For thirty years, since the inception of The International Dermal Institute (IDI) and the Dermalogica professional skincare brand, the driven entrepreneur has focused her business on creating professional opportunities and economic empowerment for women.

In 2011, she launched Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship, otherwise known as Dermalogica’s now famous ‘FITE’ campaign. The initiative was aimed at providing women entrepreneurs around the world support through investment in their potential. It’s now been run in more than 70 countries and helped to fund over 50,000 women in their entrepreneurship, worldwide.

Also recognized at the CEW Achiever Award ceremony, were Laura Geller, founder of Laura Geller Beauty; Alli Webb, founder of Drybar and Wende Zomnir, CCO and founding partner of Urban Decay Cosmetics. Additionally, Leonard Lauder, Chairman Emeritus, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Have your say: Do you think awards like this are important for recognising the achievements of women in the beauty industry?
