Millennials: Keep them keen

With millennials – those born between 1981 and 2000 – making up a huge proportion of beauty workers across the country, salon owners knows that keeping them from resigning can be a full-time job in itself. And that’s not because millennials are work-shy, as the Boomer generation so often declares. Quite the opposite, says business analyst, Christopher Burns. “This is a generation that knows its worth. They are educated, worldly and have a set of unshakable values.,” he says. “And with that in mind, they won’t stick around in an employment situation when they feel like they’d be happier elsewhere. While they’re money-savvy, they’re experience-driven.”

Here’s our rundown on how to elevate millennial retention to your salon.

Give them opportunity to grow
This generation has plans. And if you’re standing in their way, prepare to say goodbye. “While Generation X before them were thrilled just to get a foot in the door, Millenials want to know how your business can help then achieve their professional goals. And they’re not shy about it,” says Christopher. “If you spot talent that you want to hold on to, speak with that employee about their aspirations and workshop ways in which you can work on developing those, whether it be a management course, or additional training.”

Be flexible
If this generation learned something from their parents, it’s that they don’t want to be a slave to their job. “They’ve seen that flexible workplaces exist and they’re likely to want your commitment on that, whether it’s altered starting and finishing times to fit in with their other commitments, or an option to purchase additional leave so they can travel, you should consider it,” says Christopher.

Divisive behaviour won’t be tolerated
This is the generation that has fought for – and continues to advocate for – LGTBQI rights. They have taken a stand against racism and sexism. “This is a values-driven generation,” says Christopher. “They simply will not work for an employer that contradicts their values or their moral code, and nor should they. While their parents would have kept their heads down and ignored such behaviour, Millenials won’t. And they won’t stick around for it.”
