TAFE NSW Delivers Statement of Attainment in Classic Eyelash Extensions to Boost Skilled Worker Numbers

Select TAFE NSW campuses have commenced the delivery of an eyelash extensions short course in a bid to inject more skilled workers into the local beauty industry.

The Statement of Attainment in Classic Eyelash Extensions (901-00056) is a popular course being offered to interested students across seven NSW campuses between December 2024 and May 2025. The course runs over an intensive block of seven days, with in-person classes kicking off at TAFE NSW Meadowbank this week and next, followed by TAFE NSW Newcastle in May. Classes ran at TAFE NSW’s West Wollongong, Granville, Liverpool, and Gymea last December.

TAFE NSW graduate Shanay Neave attained her Certificate III in Beauty Services via the West Wollongong campus in 2016. By 2023, Shanay was back at TAFE NSW to complete her studies in beauty teaching. Consequently, Shanay was selected to teach the Statement of Attainment in Classic Eyelash Extensions course at that same campus last year – an experience she describes as “incredibly rewarding”.

These days, Shanay is the owner of exclusive eyelash studio, SN Lash Artistry in Fairy Meadow. “It was amazing to share my knowledge and skills with the new generation of beauty professionals,” she says. “I loved seeing the enthusiasm and eagerness of the students as they dived into the world of beauty and lash artistry. The interactive nature of the course allowed for hands-on practice, which I believe is essential in our industry.”

For beauty teachers like Shanay, the aim is to have students develop both technical and business skills that will see them through their careers. “While mastering the art of eyelash extensions is crucial, understanding how to operate a successful beauty business is equally important. I emphasise the value of customer service, professionalism, and truly understanding customers’ wants and needs. I want my students to leave with the confidence not only to create stunning looks but also to manage and grow their own businesses effectively. My goal is to prepare them for the real-world challenges they will face in this industry, ensuring they have the tools they need to thrive,” she explains.

“I want my students to leave with the confidence not only to create stunning looks but also to manage and grow their own businesses effectively.”

Shanay credits TAFE NSW for giving her the confidence and practical skills she’s needed to open her own business. “I feel extremely fortunate to have explored this career pathway and encourage others to dream big and consider a career as a beauty technician.”

Despite the job market slowing in recent years and the beauty sector facing a seemingly uphill battle when it comes to in recruitment, TAFE NSW Head Teacher Beauty Therapy South, Nancy Rieck believes now is a “great time to enter the industry” with students like Shanay emerging. “The growing demand for high-quality beauticians means it’s a fantastic time to join the industry by trying something new or upskilling at TAFE NSW,” Nancy says.

As a successful salon owner, Shanay says she looks for “a blend of passion and a strong work ethic” in graduating therapists to employ herself. “A genuine love for the beauty industry is essential, as it drives individuals to excel and stay updated with trends and techniques. They need to be willing, ready to work, and genuinely want to be there.”

“Ultimately, other business owners and I want to hire individuals who are not only skilled but also enthusiastic and committed to delivering exceptional service.”
