Students from Australasian College Broadway enter Competition

After being given only two weeks to prepare for the WorldSkills Regional Hairdressing Competition, the Australasian College Broadway took up the challenge and entered seven of its hairdressing students to compete against other schools, on Sunday 14 August.

The competition, hosted at the Meadowbank TAFE, had students battle it out for seven and a half hours completing three hair styles including men’s, women’s and an upstyle. Michael Walker, a student from the College, came in third place.

Chairman and Founding Director of the Australasian College Broadway, Maureen Houssein-Mustafa OAM said she was very proud of her students’ efforts and ability to prepare in a matter of weeks, when preparations for these types of competitions normally start 18 months out.

“Our educators Julie Halkidis and Jodie McCabe who attended the competition in full support, commented on how proud they were of the techniques and capabilities each of the competing students showed and the professionalism in which they carried out their tasks under such pressure,” Ms. Houssein-Mustafa said.

Ms. Houssein-Mustafa believes so strongly in the WorldSkills competition that she has pledged $60,000 and additional professional training support for the two students, Alex Odgers and Alexis Scott, who are competing in the beauty and hairdressing categories this year. They will be attending the final of the WorldSkills 2011 competition in London during October.
