Living Coral ‒ “a life-affirming shade of orange with a golden undertone” ‒ has been named Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2019.
According to the Pantone Colour Institute, Living Coral represents the fusion of modern life as it “is a nurturing colour that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media”.
“Just as coral reefs are a source of sustenance and shelter to sea life, vibrant yet mellow Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment.
“In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy.
Pantone Color Institute executive director Leatrice Eiseman adds that “colour is an equalising lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities and this is particularly true for Living Coral
“With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”
She said the life affirming hue is ideal for makeup lovers as it complements all skin tones.
“Uninhibited, playful looks are emboldened by Living Coral, which, as the centre of a kaleidoscope of colour, encourages experimentation in beauty with palettes, textures, shimmers and sheens.
Butter London, Pantone’s official beauty partner in the US, is the first of many cosmetic brands set to celebrate coral colours in the year ahead with the launch of its London x Pantone collection featuring three nail polishes, a lip gloss and a blush stick.
Butter London general manager Julie Campbell says the colour is ideal for anyone looking to “add a bit of warmth, energy and comfort” to their day.
