Ipsy unveils Betty Boop collection

Betty Boop, the world’s oldest “sass symbol”, has launched a cosmetics collection with Ipsy, the world’s largest beauty subscription brand.

Created in 1930 by Max Fleischer for his ‘Talkartoons’ series, Betty starred in more than 100 cartoons and appeared in dozens of movies, television specials and commercials.

Although Betty is now almost 90 years old her popularity still shines in pop culture – she is one of the world’s most successful licensed characters and has over 1.5 million followers on Facebook.

Jenna Habayeb, IPSY’s Chief Brand Officer said the company has developed a limited-edition line of “fun and flirty products featuring the always glamorous icon” to be included in this month’s subscription box.

The “robust line of 13 Betty-approved items” includes:

  • Boop-Oop-A-Doop, Mauve it, Baby, Hotsy Totsy and All Jazzed Up red lipsticks
  • That’s So Betty eyeshadow palette
  • Drawn to You liquid eyeliner
  • Blink and Wink mascara
  • Little Red Dress nail polish

Habayeb said Ipsy, which has more than 3 million active members and has shipped over 1 billion products since its launch in 2011, was excited to bring Betty’s signature look and feel to new beauty consumers.

“Betty Boop is one of those iconic female figures that spans multiple generations,” she said.

“She translates so naturally into beauty, and we’re thrilled to bring this collection to our members.”

Carla Silva, the vice-president of global licensing at King Features (Betty Boop’s licensing agent), said the company is excited about the collaboration with Ipsy as it “is all about confidence and being bold – just like Betty.”

“If there is one thing that Betty knows, it’s how to make a lasting impression.

“For 89 years she has sung, sashayed, and ‘Boop-Oop-a-Dooped’ past rules and conventions, unafraid to take risks or set trends, and proving time after time that she can do anything that a man can do.

“Youthful, ambitious, sassy and confident, Betty Boop seeks to make a positive change in the world around her.  She is vibrant and magnetic — she inspires. Betty is stylish and sexy, but never to please anyone but herself.  She’s got class. She’s proud of who she is and won’t apologize for it, approaching life with irrepressible moxie.”
