How home-grown lash and brow brand CanGro helped local salons survive the pandemic

CanGro initially explored overseas manufacturing when the business was in research and development phase back in 2016, but saw more value in product quality and processes that local manufacturers offered. By being locally made, CanGro unwittingly avoided challenges caused by international manufacturing and sourcing for huge numbers of Australian brands last year. A lucky decision made them the go-to lash and brow serums in Australia last year, and brands and customers have fallen in love with the Australian-made and -sourced brand.

Instead, they benefitted from Australian regulatory body-approved manufacturers, quality ingredients and tight turnaround times and were able to supply plenty of salons with retail product to bolster their respective bottom lines when salon services were off the menu. “We strived for creating something that the highest quality and truly did what it said it was going to do, we wanted to be confident right from the start that it was going to be something that we would be proud to own. It has ended up being part of our core values has and what sets us apart, which is testament with challenging times like now,” says Co-Founder Belinda Robinson.

“We nearly had our products manufactured in China,” said Director Felecia Tappenden. “But when some of our ingredients were questionable in China we found a local factory 10 minutes from our home and haven’t looked back. We really wanted a vegan product that was free from all nasties, in particular parabens and growth hormone free, and Australian made was our safest bet.”

Understandably clients are looking for local brands more and more after so much disruptio to the international supply chain in the last eighteen months. “During lockdown our business went crazy with salons,” says Belinda. “It wasn’t until our competitors who manufactured overseas became out of stock, that the business really took a turn for the better. We loved helping salons still bring in revenue when services for them stopped.”

Felicia says all CanGro products are 100% mark up for salons and the brand always has offers and gift-with-purchase options so both salons and their clients always get great value. The products are also for recurring revenue. Long Lashes and Bold Brows get are repeat purchases every 3-4 months, so salons have a great way to make consistent income as well as being able to sell and market our products on their social media and e-commerce platform.

Since launching 4 years ago the brand has joined the Australian Made Campaign, and the founders have noticed that customers like knowing the product is locally sourced and made, moreso now than ever. It’s been one of the best business and marketing decisions the brand ever made, say the founders.
