With a background in the medical industry and a wealth of experience in brand development, Professional Beauty chats to Pauline Valle about the story behind Ultraderm.

Tell us about your beauty-career-to-date and why you chose that path?

I was originally in the medical industry but a fantastic opportunity came up in the salon distribution business. Over the years I have worked and grown several brands and eventually decided to develop something of my own – and that’s how Ultraderm started! Ultraderm was launched in March 2009 –and we have been growing rapidly ever since.

Why are you so passionate about the skin?

Having close family members with problematic skin conditions inspired me to do something about it. The ability to make a difference to someone’s appearance and boost their confidence levels is fantastic.

What does your job involve on a day-to-day basis?

Where do I start? My day begins early when I catch up on emails and other correspondence. My mornings are generally spent planning future developments, either product formulations or business planning. Afternoons are generally reserved for client contact as they are an important part of our business. I also do a fair amount of travel locally, regionally and internationally.

Why is education fundamental to the brand?

Continuous education is paramount to keeping up with an ever-changing industry and its regulations. We have regular state training days, head office training and in-salon training, so salons have different options to suit their needs. Our training consists of in depth product and ingredient information followed by practical work and retailing techniques.

What teaching methods do you find to be the most effective?

We have found a combination of theory and experiential learning to be the most effective for us.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The interaction with our fantastic salon partners and their customers! It is rewarding to see the results our skincare achieves.

Which are your favourite products?

I would have to say – Ultraderm Absolute A & E Serum, Skin Renew Active Night Repair and Skin Renew Moisturiser, Daily Protector Moisturiser SPF 30 and Essential Restore Serum. Last, but not least Active Treatment Lotion for the Body.

What’s next for the brand?

After intensive research and product development, we are looking forward to new product releases in 2014, so stay tuned.
