Cosmetex 2012, which took place 3-5 May, had over 1100 cosmetic medical practitioners and exhibitors in attendance.
Cosmetex 2012 was held at Cairns on 3rd to 5th May 2012.
An impressive schedule of talks and workshops led by respected industry professionals and brands from both Australia and oversees ensures it is the largest cosmetic conference in the southern hemisphere. More than 69 companies and organisations showcased their cosmetic medical and surgery products, devices and treatments.
Russell Knudson president of the ACCS (Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery) said of the attendance, “We have had an excellent opening with a huge number of people, with very big growth in the number of attendees from the paramedical field which means we are training more and more people working in an assistant capacity, such as nurse injectors. We have been very well supported by our loyal exhibitors again this year; the numbers are looking really good and we run out of exhibitors books very early on in the conference. This year has seen an unexpectedly large number of registrations. We were stunned last year by how successful we were in Hobart and are going to meet that again this year.”
The CPSA (Cosmetics Physicians Society Australia) have their annual meeting at Cosmetex and contribute to the talks and the educational seminars. Gabi Caswell president of the CPSA said of the conference: “There has been extremely good attendance and a great variety of fantastic talks with many well-respected speakers including Dr George Marcell's Deep Plane Face Lift. There is always an enormous effort to bring in a large number of overseas visitors to Cosmetex– different countries have different approaches to aesthetics and beauty. It is important that when we look at what's culturally appropriate in the areas of beauty we recognise what other countries are doing, for example, when you go to Europe it is completely different to the market in America and again in Australia. We have such sensitive skin due to sun damage that we have a little more to think about in Australia in terms of skin health and aesthetics.”

Of the coming months, Caswell said, “The CPSA is contributing to the government's working committee on IPL and lasers and actively lobbying to professionalise the industry for beauty therapists to doctors for patient safety outcomes and standards – this will be one of the biggest industry challenges of the next couple of years.”
Cosmetic and plastic surgeons, dermatologists, cosmetic physicians and nurses attend Cosmetex for the excellent talks and workshops. It is important for cometic professionals keep up-to-date with their knowledge and Cosmetex provides those in the industry with a platform to learn about new technologies and ingredients and cutting-edge equipment.

When attendees weren't at talks and seminars they could visit exhibitors in the main hall. Exhibitors come to Cosmetex to showcase their products and for the networking opportunity to meet their target market and existing clients.

A few of the exhibitors we spoke to said they were having a great response at the conference: “We have had a busy couple of days – it's been fabulous to see familiar faces and we've also made a lot of new contacts,” said Liane Kirwan, national sales business development manager for Advanced Skin Technology. “We are always exhibiting at Cosmetex as we are distributors and manufacturers of cosmesceutical skincare including Apect Dr, Societe, Cosmedix and SkinMedica. We are sponsors of the paramedical course and look after the paramedicals quite predominantly. Cosmetex gives us an opportunity to see some of our doctors and re-familiarise ourselves with our existing clients as well as new ones coming on board. We are also showcasing our new PCA range which is already well known in the US – it has a great range of peels and an oxidation treatment.”
Stene Marshall, CEO of Equipmed said, “We're one of the silver sponsors of Cosmetex and we have a speaker from the UK talking about our latest release the DermaPen; it's a device for rejuvenation and scarring, etc. We also come to Cosmetex to meet industry professionals who have come for the opportunity to be educated in the latest treatments and technologies and meet companies such as ourselves. We have also recently launched the Tatt2Away, a tattoo removal machine – a needling device for tattoo removal of all colours in four treatments – it's not a laser based product.”

It is also a great opportunity to network.
