Fillers balance the equation of beauty

Facial symmetry, defined cheekbones, great skin and plump lips; these are some of the attributes that have been earmarked by beauty experts as elements of timeless beauty.

Beauty is subjective to personal preference, but it’s hard to ignore commonalities that appear repeatedly when examining the world’s ‘most beautiful’ lists.

For the not-so naturally blessed, dermal fillers are helping tick these beauty boxes, according to Dr Scott Ingram, Vice-President of the Australasian Society of Plastic Surgeons.

“Looking at models and celebrities who are widely considered ‘beautiful’, there are a number of key aspects of their facial appearance that we identify as beautiful, whether on a subconscious or more obvious level,” said Dr Ingram.

“If I mention smooth skin, symmetrical faces, plump lips and defined cheekbones, I could be talking about any number of attractive people and this is because these are universally attractive qualities that have come to characterise a beautiful face.

“Almost all of these issues can be addressed with injectables, and it’s usually a minimally invasive procedure which offers instant results without any downtime, hence the popularity.”

Facial symmetry as a marker of aesthetic attractiveness has been documented as far back as Plato’s theory of ‘golden proportions’, and still rings true when it comes to modern beauty, according to Deborah Miller, national director of Miss Universe Australia.

“A symmetrical face and great bone structure is universally attractive.” Miller said.

“Beautiful skin also really makes someone stunning…[skin] is so important hence, albeit controversially, young models are used in advertising so often.

“Only in youth is skin perfect and supple – there is a big difference between a 15 year old’s skin and a 25 year old's skin.”

Botox is a popular choice for people looking for a subtle way to rewind the telltale signs of ageing, gaining a youthful complexion without the need for surgery, and it has certainly paid off for model Victoria Maxwell.

“In my industry, good looks aren’t enough – you need to be flawless. I decided to get Botox as I was becoming really aware of my frown lines and crow’s feet around my eyes and I wanted a quick fix, non-surgical solution,” she said.

“Afterwards I was at a shoot with my agent – she didn't know that I’d had Botox but she commented on how amazing she thought I looked and I did get put forward for more work from then on.”

As discussed at the recent ASAPS conference in Sydney, new dermal filler product formulations and innovations are hitting Australia which offer improved duration and lift capabilities.
