Clarisonic Revisited

Held in the Museum Of Contemporary Art Sydney, the Australian Clarisonic team held a spectacular media launch in which Clarisonic co-founder, Dr Robb Akridge, joined from the US to discuss the device.

The room was transformed with stations set up for guests to try out Clarisonic and a model demonstration on one of them. After Christine Burke, corporate communications manager at L’Oréal Luxe, started proceedings with a short-video about how Clarisonic came to be, from its origin in Seattle to the Oprah and Ellen shows, hands of celebrities and millions worldwide. Next, she introduced Dr Akridge to speak.

He said he was one of the engineers who had worked on the Sonicare toothbrushes before selling the concept to Phillips. Dr Akridge and four colleagues were then looking for the next big thing and after looking at market trends decided that skincare was the way to go. After looking at major skin problems such as acne, they consulted a dermatologist and started to develop a product that wouldn’t negatively affect the skin’s integrity. The Clarisonic had to influence the skin in a strong enough way to make a positive impact but not so strongly it would damage skin elasticity. The Clarisonic has a patented oscillating motion, moving skin 4-10 mm, back and forth, at 300 x per second. This causes liquid to push away and is, according to Dr Akridge, the optimum frequency for cleansing skin.

Dr Akridge also discussed how the Clarisonic is particularly good for problem skin with enlarged pores and excessive sebum as the deep clean encourages the pores to close. He added that the device is even safe and effective for those with Rosacea since by deeply cleansing the skin, medication is better absorbed.

The different Clarisonic brush types

Today, the brand is made up of three key products – the Clarisonic Mia, the Clarisonic PLUS, which includes a face and body brush, and the Clarisonic PRO, for skincare professionals to use in-salon.
