Brett Smith, owner and operator of Port Douglas Natural Therapies Centre and Spa, the first spa to open in the town, has taken on several French therapists from the prestigious Peyrefitte International School of Aesthetics, this year.

He says he is already benefiting from the influence the dynamic therapists are having on his spa and the greater Port Douglas region. “These aspiring spa managers have brought with them European poise and sophistication and a tangible savoir faire as they intern with us.”

This is the first year his spa has participated in the programme, and he now joins some of the most famous spas in Bora Bora, Tahiti, St Barthelemy, The Reunion Island, Switzerland, and Thailand.

The schools internship programme has been going for six years and has been a successful experience for both students and spa managers. In Australia, several other spas in the Palm Cove, Port Douglas and Daintree region have been participating for a year or two. Brett’s spa is the first independent spa not linked with Destination style resorts.

Apart from the intensive in-house training in KORA Organics by Miranda Kerr and the exclusive LaGaia Naturaceuticals facials and spa treatments, the therapists have been given extensive training in heated and chilled stone therapy and crystal facials by Sandra Jones-Rider of ScenStone Therapy. “The training equips the therapists with all they need to continue the level of excellence needed to perform the many and varied treatments of the spa,” explains Brett.
