Broadway Musicals theme for this year’s expo Fantasy Make-up Awards

The Fantasy Make-up Awards at the 2009 Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo will have a Broadway Musicals theme, as did the awards at this year’s Melbourne beauty expo.

Billed as Australia’s largest independent makeup competition, the awards include two categories; Fantasy and Bridal. They are judged by qualified makeup directors from both theatre and film.

Entrants are given free rein to create some of the most awe-inspiring Fantasy makeup looks that in the past have impressed some of the most renowned experts in the field.

“I especially want to congratulate all those fabulous artists competing in the Fantasy make up awards. I was totally inspired by their work.” Rae Morris, celebrity makeup artist and author of Makeup: The Ulimate Guide, has said.

Meryl Faulkner, competition coordinator, and Principal of Making Faces Make up Studio, said: “We’ve got some really interesting entries for the Sydney expo this year who will be competing with their own interpretation of makeup looks from some of the big name Broadway musicals like Cats, Chicago, and Wicked. We expect it to be an extremely exciting showcase of talent.”

As previously reported on professionalbeauty.com.au, organics, health and wellbeing will be the headlining theme throughout the expo. Show organisers, Reed Exhibitions, have introduced an Organic Zone, an area dedicated solely to showcase certified organic products.

“Organic products are fast becoming part of a lifestyle rather than a simple trend” said Lauren Ebbeck, Exhibition Director. “Our Organic Zone is proudly supported by Australian Certified Organic (ACO), the certifier of organic products in Australia. There will be a talk by Akiko Nichols from Australian Certified Organic at 11am on Saturday for all those interested in what makes a product ‘certified organic’ and how to go about it.”

The wellbeing theme continues into a spectacular concept spa, designed to take visitors on an educational and culinary journey, displaying nutritional foods that can be offered to enrich a spa or salon visit. ‘In the Raw’ (room 1) will include a wall display full of nutritional and healthy raw food options while rooms 2 and 3 will offer sampling of Byron Bay herbal teas and pure water. Sherry Strong, food philosopher and nutritional strategist will be onsite sharing concepts, ideas and information. Strong is the creator of www.realfoodforwomen.com and www.realfooddetox.com

Don Peers, ‘yoga guru’ from Elix’r health club, will demonstrate stretching exercises and relaxation techniques that can be easily adopted by staff in spas and salons.

In addition to a three-hour advanced makeup workshop with Rae Morris, there is a line up of seminars headed up by successful business entrepreneurs and industry experts. Keynote speaker this year is Tim Pethick, founder and creator of Nudie juice, one of the ‘Top 10 most influential brands in the Asia Pacific region’.

Elly Lukas College of Beauty Therapy will hold specialist Indian head massage and hot stone facial massage workshops over both days.

Natasha Severino, fashion catwalk makeup maestro, shares her tips and tricks on the main stage on Saturday at 12 noon.

The Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo was awarded ‘Best Trade show under 10,000m2’ by the Exhibition and Event Association of Australasia in 2008.

The Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo takes place at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour on August 8 and 9.
