Helping Clients Avoid Post Tan Disaster

You’ve got a premium product and impeccably well-trained staff to apply it, but without the appropriate post tan care regime, your client can walk away a streaky mess, writes Nadia Stennett. Here’s what you need to know about discussing post tan care with your customers…

“This is the worst spray tan I’ve ever had!”

Words no tanning professional ever wants to hear come out of a client’s mouth. But being good at your job and using a high-quality product isn’t enough to prevent that from happening. That’s because, as all experienced tanning professionals know, what your client does after they leave the salon is just as important as what you do in the salon.

A popular humorous meme makes this case in point:

And while #tanfail images like this on social media make for a good laugh, these post tanning disasters can have a much more serious impact on your repeat business.

“Post tan care can make or break a great in-salon spray tan,” says Bonza Bronz national training educator, Silvia Augello.

“Advising our clients on correct post tan care will ensure the longevity of their professionally applied spray tan whilst ensuring a reason for them to return to the salon,” explains Augello.

A simple chat with your client can be all it takes to ensure your tanning handiwork stays looking professional long after your appointment has ended, and there are some key facts every client should know before they leave your salon…

Augello’s top five pieces of advice for tanning staff to give their clients:

1. Preparation: Ensure the client has prepared the skin properly prior to the tan application, this includes exfoliating and miosturising the skin two days prior to their spray tan NOT on the same day

2.  Avoidance: Let the client know to avoid moisturisers, perfume and deodorants as well as tight clothing after tan application.

3. Waiting: Advise the client of the length of time they need to want for the tan to develop before showering or being exposed to moisture.

4. Staying dry: Let the client know to avoid rain or activity that causes excessive perspiration during this tan activation period.

5. The right products: Recommend a tan-specific body wash and gradual tanning cream for at-home tan maintenance.

“As tanning professionals, it’s so important to acknowledge that in salon tanning application is only 50% of the total tanning service we can offer our clients. Providing the right at home maintenance system, information and products is vital to ensure your clients maintain a natural looking tan at home that fades evenly,” emphasises Augello.

Have your say: Have you had a client complain about their tan result because they didn’t follow proper post tan care procedures?
